Recap: Display, Design & Trial Preparation Workshop

Recap: Display, Design & Trial Preparation Workshop

Over 250 students from 16 schools came together at La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus for a free preparation workshop on 27 October 2017.

The energy and the buzz in the slick McKay Lecture Theatre was palpable and the students, their teachers and team managers were eager to hear about how they could prepare for the Display & Presentation, Design & Construction and Trial elements of the RACV Energy Breakthrough. Each component supports learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Presenters

Display & Presentation – Simon O’Mallon, La Trobe University

Rather than reading from a sheet of A4, prepare yourself cue cards, know your material and rehearse!

Design & Construction – Ravi Murty, Head of Sales, Asia Pacific, Rail at Cyient Australia

The first step in the design process is to define the problem. Once you’ve done that you can start to develop different solutions, test them, refine them and then test again. This definition – and any processes you went through – can be shared in the Assessment for the judges.

Trial – Andy Buchanan, 2017 Australian 1500m and Cross Country Champion

Do something every day to make yourself ready to perform at your peak:
This might include going to bed early tonight, eating healthy foods. I aim to run every day to become a better runner and work towards your goals. Find out what that means for you and do those steps in preparation.

Hands-on Workshop

Big thank you to David and Johnathan from the Discovery Science & Technology Centre, Bendigo for their help in turning theoretical into a practical exercise!

Teams were challenged to create a craft that could hover within a vertical wind tunnel using every day objects. Good fun stuff!
